For tomorrow, Sunday, August 30, 2026, Central America will remain under critical monitoring conditions, divided by a stark climate contrast: while the south of the region faces alerts for heavy rains and soil saturation, the north is fighting with emergency decrees for a severe weather drought.
The current surveillance and official alerts by country are as follows:
๐ต๐ฆ Panama: National Prevention Alert (IMHPA and SINAPROC)
The Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology of Panama (IMHPA) and SINAPROC maintain active a National Warning of Prevention for Rains and Significant Storms.
Atmospheric Instability Risk: The warning is still in place continuously due to the moisture drag of the remnants of Tropical Wave No. 39 and low pressure systems. Frequent thunderstorms are forecast to very strong accompanied by electrical activity and local wind gusts.
Critical Soil Saturation: Authorities demand extreme caution over high water retention on land in the metropolitan area and the countryโs west. The risk of sudden urban flooding, river overflow and landslides is high.
Emergency Lines: In the event of any eventuality, emergency services or 520-4426 should be reported immediately.
๐จ๐ท Costa Rica: Warning for Instability and Trade Winds (IMN)
The National Meteorological Institute (IMN) maintains a warning for unstable conditions due to the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and moderate trade winds in the Caribbean.
Mountain Sector Surveillance: Rigorous monitoring is maintained in the Central Valley, the North Zone and the Caribbean slope. Due to the accumulated of previous rains, the hillside soils are vulnerable to landslides.
Coastal Surveillance: Caution is required on the coast due to local wind gusts associated with the development of evening storm clouds.
๐ธ๐ป El Salvador: National Red Alert for Severe Drought (MARN)
Unlike the southern countries, the Directorate-General for Civil Protection and the Ministry of Environment (MARN) issued a National Red Alert.
Emergency by Water Deficit: The measure responds to an extreme meteorological and hydroagricultural drought intensified by the El Niรฑo phenomenon. The authorities monitor the drastic collapse of the rains and the high temperatures that put agricultural production at risk.
Short-Term Insulated Storms: Despite the general drought, for the afternoon and evening of morning focused electric rains and gusts exceeding 40 km/h in the volcanic chain and the northern area (Chalatenango and Morazรกn) are monitored due to thermal convective effects.
๐ญ๐ณ ๐ณ๐ฎ Honduras and Nicaragua: Monitoring of Basins
Both nations maintain routine weather surveillance warnings on their Caribbean slopes and high-land areas. The rapid flooding of minor streams is monitored after isolated convective downpours in the late afternoon.
