No early checkins. Net order is Daryl, Bob (NY), Rick, and whoever else shows up. I was tired from a weekend hamfest trip, so I skipped a local square dance special, to be here tonight. I had a good time at the Lawrence County Winterfest in Hoxie; but I lost my resistance, as I did too much inductance on food, reaching my capacitance rather quickly...and on the way home, my pants flew south for the winter...or they wanted to work the low bands. What didn't help is that my ride won a grease gun (hi hi). We laughed and made snide remarks about it all the way back home...which was good, as he had stopped by a northeast Arkansas cemetery, to visit the graves of family members. We were able to check into the Razorback Net on 80 meters on the way home, but the bands were noisy. There was only 1 main dealer, D And L Electronics, plus a table with the ARRL, and The Razorback Net. Most of the rest was "a flea market boneyard" with "worthless boat anchor doorstop gear" that goes from one hamfest flea market boneyard to another...and they'll never sell. There were a bunch of youth hams there, from a club in Cherokee Village, that has had over 3 dozen new young hams get their license in the last few months, and they are starting a new class next month. Since the average age of hams is 66, it's refreshing to know that there are young people getting into the hobby. A long time Arkansas ham, Bob Herrell, AJ5C, became a Silent Key on Feb. 18...he will be missed. They had a pie and cake auction, but being borderline type 2 diabetic, and feeling the caffeine that was in the chocolate items, I passed on that. A little girl and her family at the table next to the one that I was manning for the Quarter Century Wireless Association wanted a certain cake, and when she won it, she ran up to the front to get it!! Our tornado season starts on Sunday, and I'm hoping to do a severe weather Simulated Emergency Test on March 4, between 11am and 2pm Eastern Time...but it depends on the weather. I will know for sure if I can do it by next Monday...one will be able to listen to it on the Broadcastify platform under Arkansas Skywarn. And on knowing for sure, if my disability comes in this Friday, I'm going to book a bus trip and 3 nights hotel to the Huntsville Hamfest in August. I would've liked a longer vacation, but this will save me some money, and allow me to get away from things for a few days. They gather on Friday night at the 88 Buffet, there in Huntsville. It offers Asian, American, Seafood, and more. One ham said "if you come to Huntsville, I'll buy your dinner Friday night"...I wonder if that means I can go for broke?? (hi hi). I will be in my Trains Conductor outfit on Saturday...and if the W5KUB Live Cam is there, I will be sure to stop by there to make my presence known (hi hi). Area Waffle Houses during the overnight hours Friday and Saturday, no longer offer dining room service. Instead, you have to order via a walk-up window. I guess a spate of robberies, and drunks making a mess forced them to do this. My ride and I went up to a Waffle House in Beebe, and I had 2 eggs over well, hash browns, toast, with some grilled chicken...it was the best grilled chicken I had ever eaten!! I picked up some handouts on Formal Written Traffic, and for the Razorback Net. If I can find a closer node on remotehams.com, and can use it for the few HF Nets I want to check into, I am looking into the possibility of doing HF Nets. Doing that, and Formal Written Traffic, are two things I've wanted to do with the hobby. The Time change is a week from Sunday, March 8, to "Dumb Stupid Time" (hi hi). Most net times won't change, but the UTC Times will be an hour earlier. For those who do the time change, but their net is on UTC Time, checkin time will be one hour later. If you forget to "spring forward", you'll be an hour late for church, work, school, appointments (medical and otherwise), ham radio nets, etc. Whew!! That was a lot to cover. GE Bob (OK), and Carl. Bob (OK), you'll be after Rick, and Carl will be after Bob (OK). GE Bob (NY), are you snowed in?? >>> ** NS2B: GE All. Nah, we got lucky and all the bad weather went east of us. I've been watching the weather channel, as I'm sure you have, those east have gotten hammered. Good to hear your HF activity is picking up! I'm still puttering with that Meshtastick node I put together. I've found location is everything with that gadget. Here at my QTH I can get 10 or 11 neighboring nodes. If I take it over to my YL's QTH I get 110+ - crazy! I always thought I lived in an RF blackhole, now I know! Still working on this weeks Hamword. Not much else going on. BTU Daryl >>> ** N5VLZ: Bob, I just discovered I hadn't started the logging/capture buffer, but it's on now (blush!). I was watching Ryan Hall, KJ4WHM, and the groundhog is laughing, saying "I was right, you fools!!" (hi hi). That's crazy on location. FB on Hamword. GE Rick, how was your week?? >>> ** VA7RBP: Good evening Daryl and all on NET! I guess it's been a couple weeks since last on, last week was Family Day holiday. Still not doing a heck of a lot, mostly looking after the wife. Her knee replacement surgery is now two months down the road, she's doing well, good progress. The weather here has been mild, temps between 15F and 45F, had a couple of snow falls that didn't amount to much. I've been going for walks a couple times a day to attempt to keep from just sitting around doing nothing. On the radio front, still just doing 40M and 20M PACTOR in the mornings, calling our NOON-TIME NET Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday, and another 2m fm net ON Monday evenings, along with checking into an 80M OLIVIA 16/1K NET on weeknights, and doing the equipment checks at the PREOC in Nelson on Wednesday nights. I am still going to investigate Hamtastic stuff, just haven't had the $$ to buy something to play with, car repairs.... Well, that's about all I have so BTU Daryl >>> ** N5VLZ: Rick, FB on Arlene's recovery, the weather, and the walking. I did some walking at the hamfest, but not much. FB On the nets, equipment checks, and Hamtastic Stuff. We are only one step away from being rich...all we need is money (hi hi). GE Bob (OK), how was your week?? >>> ** KF5TVG: GE Daryl and all on the net! This was a slow week. Had Allergies and/or a cold and just didn't feel like doing much. :( Bob (NY) glad you are making progress with Meshtastic! Rick, glad to hear Arlene is continuing to improve! Daryl, your news about Waffle House closing dining area during overnight hours brought tears to my eyes. Last time I was in one was mid 90s in Bentonville, Arkansas. I was on the HP sales/support team for Walmart, and we took a break around 3am,and went for waffles. It was full of people, and the cigarette smoke was thick enough to cut with a knife. Oh Yeah, the tears just now was thinking about that smoke! Hi Hi That's all for now, BTU >>> ** N5VLZ: Bob (OK), you probably thought you were getting cancer of the eyeballs (hi hi). These idiots were apparently hassling and abusing crew members as well. Nobody has belief in RESPECT anymore. Bummer on the allergies...pollen season is soon. GE Carl, how was your week?? >>> ** KX4AC: GE All on the net! Well, been busy lately, but not really sure where the time seems to go. I took the car through the car wash a little while ago and forgot to remove the mag-mount antenna before I did. BANG! Ripped the coax in half and the antenna flew off onto the ground. Managed to patch the cable and got the radio working again, but gotta remember next time to take down the antenna! Serves me right for washing the car anyway (hi hi). I have been playing a little with both GMRS and DMR, but for my money it still seems like most of the activity around here is on either 2m or 70cm. I discovered that a local hobby shop has those laser-cut wood kits from a company called ROKR. They are very intricate. No glue, all tabs and slots. I just finished a cuckoo clock kit. Very cool. I guess that's about all for now. Back to net >>> ** N5VLZ: Carl, sounds like a ham radio horror movie..."Attack Of The Killer Car Wash" (hi hi). At least you were able to get it back together. I'm sure you're not the only one who has done that. I had thought about GMRS, but I'm so busy with other things, I can't see the need to get involved in that. FB on the laser cut wood kit, and the cuckoo clock kit. That's it for round 1, back to the top for final comments. Bob (NY) thanks for the use of the BBS...anything else?? >>> ** NS2B: I keep forgetting to mention I got my GMRS license last year because a non-ham buddy wanted to play with radio. He ended up losing interest. Such is life! That's all for me - everyone have a good week - 73 >>> ** N5VLZ: Bob, bummer on the GMRS deal...but there's plenty of other stuff to keep busy with. Thanks for being here. Rick, anything else?? >>> ** VA7RBP: That's it for me. Everyone have a great week, stay well, 73 until next time! BTU Daryl >>> ** N5VLZ: Take care, Rick...glad Miss Arlene is recovering nicely. Bob (OK), anything else?? >>> ** KF5TVG: Nope that's all for me. Hope all have a great week! 73 and BTU >>> ** N5VLZ: Have a good week, Bob...see you next time. I wonder if there's a Waffle House in Norman?? (hi hi). Carl, anything else?? >>> ** KX4AC: You guys are making me want Waffle House now. It has been a long time since I have been to one ... I need to find one close by. That's all for me, other than to say that we are in are nice weather time of year. Been out with the HT on foot-moble a couple of times. Need to do more of that. 73 to all till next week. >>> ** N5VLZ: Carl, I saw a meme where some of the letters on the sign were burned out, so it looked like the "Affle Hoe". That one must be in the red light district (hi hi). Thanks for being here. That will do it for tonight's net...next time we meet, it'll be March (wow!). Everyone stay safe, healthy, weather aware, and radio-active, and we'll see you next month. 73 and GN DE N5VLZ >>> Daryl Stout, N5VLZ, Little Rock, Arkansas Please see my QRZ bio for more information.
