N5VLZ:

With next Monday being Sept. 1, and the US
Labor Day Holiday, the PCL Net will be OFF
next Monday, and return on Sept. 8. We wish
everyone a safe and happy holiday weekend.
I have to release a square dance publication
late on August 31, then turn in items for the
QCWA Journal on September 1, so the extra time
will help.

Rain and thunderstorms are forecast much of
this week, but we need rain badly. My grass
hasn't grown much (which allowed me to get some
extra groceries instead of spending money on
lawn mowing). I'm ready for the cool down in the
weather, and the winter dormant months for the
lawn, to get me some extra money. I have to get
some chemicals to try to stop the ivy growing...
I wish my late Mom had never planted it, as it's
worse than kudzu.

I'm back to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
until my next disability check comes in. If it
comes in early, with the holiday, I may get it
this Friday...otherwise, I have to wait until
the 3rd, and I will run out of food (again). I
checked with Factor, but I get too little income
to buy their meals...looks like I'm shopping at
the area Kroger...at least I can order food online.
It sucks living on a budget that's tighter than a
frog's butt underwater.

I finally got my ham radio and weather BBS back up
after an 8 1/2 month hiatus due to burnout, and
other issues after my younger brother's suicide 14
months ago. The work isn't difficult getting things
going again, but it's tedious. I'm looking to set it
up in the cloud, then I never have to shut it down for
thunderstorms. Speaking of which, I'm to talk to the
Arkansas Skywarn Coordinator on Tuesday, to possibly
get back doing weather nets..that's what got me into
ham radio 34 years ago.

I'm going to the Queen Wilhelmina Hamfest on Sep. 6,
the oldest hamfest west of the Mississippi River (55
years running this year). I hope the weather won't be
too bad on top of the mountain, and they have a minature
train ride up there.

I added 2 nets to the Net Lists off my QRZ bio hyperlink:
The Grumpy Net (perfect for an old codger like me (hi hi)),
and the Chicago YL Net; but I'm sure OM's can check in as
well.

I helped a lady friend this last week, who has several
problems...I'll spare you all of the gory details, but
we're still close friends.

NS2B:

GE All!

Another busy week. A day at the track, trips out to Syracuse.
It's nice to be home. I think I can actually sleep in tomorrow!

Finally cooled off around here. Been in the 70s, been raining
off and on for the past 24 hours. It might even be enough to
make my yard green!

You know I play Hamword on Winlink. Last week, I thought it was
losing my guesses. I'd wait for 24 hours, wouldn't get a response
to one of my guesses, so I'd submit it again. Happened 2 or 3 times.
Well, all those guesses were queued up somewhere, and they unleashed
this week, and screwed up my game! No matter, it's just a game.

**

KX4AC:

GE All. Bob, I had exactly the same thing happen to me for Hamword
this week. I "lost" a couple of guesses last week, and they showed
up last night for this weeks game. It was only 2 guesses for me,
and it found one letter, so not sure if it will be a good or bad
thing this week.

For the time being, I have all the medical tests done that I need.
Now I just need to wait for approvals and then they will schedule
surgery.

It looks like we are going to get some rain over the next couple of
days. It is pretty gray out there now. It will certainly be good for
the grass, but I will disconnect the antenna from the radio, because
we usually get a fair bit of lightning.

Speaking of lightning, the W4MLB repeater that I used to use in
Melbourne FL got hit a couple of weeks ago. They still have not got
it back up. Apparently, part of one of the antennas actually
disappeared in the strike, and it may have blasted the PC motherboard
too.

Still working on some repairs on old Heathkit stuff that I have. I am
trying to get my old clock radio working again ... was doing pretty
well with that task, and then found a couple of dead parts and have to
wait for replacements. It is at least fun to see if I can get it working
again. I am pretty close.

Charley, we should definitely try to get together if you are in Phoenix.
My address and email are correct on QRZ. Packet mail and winlink are also
good for contacting me. The Arizona State Fair starts September 19 (Friday),
so maybe you will get to see that as well.

Looks like we have a big dust storm rolling in tonight. It's a good thing I
am inside :-)

NT5R:

GE everyone.

Daryl will definitely keep that hamfest in mind. Friend/co-worker moved back
to Mena after his dad died. Went to Mena hamfest that year. Good one, and
good hiking in that area also. Years ago with railway work, worked on
equipment at KCS Mena tower. Normally did not go that far south out of Fort
Smith.

Carl, we will be in Phoenix area week of September 15 or so. Maybe catch up
with you sometime while there.

Just rolled in 11 pm yesterday from SE trip, Gatlinburg, Huntsville hamfest,
Carrollton GA visiting brother, and several days in Destin FL hiking beach

Fun fun, love being on the road

Daryl, an idea for your weeds, be careful with it, but scalding hot water can
sometimes destroy weeds. Cheap if it works!

Sounds awesome Carl, will holler when get there. Remember one dust storm heading
east from Deming NM. Could see the dust in rear view mirror and managed to stay
ahead of it many many miles.

Bob, met fellow at Huntsville has maintained electronics at Talladega Race Track
for 56 years.

Bought $5 915 MHz yagi antenna for Mesh.

KI0BK:

GE all, first time here, I did something to my foot, so limping all last week and
stuck in the house. But felt better tonight, so went for a ride with xyl on our
e-scooters, 4.5 miles round trip, it was nice to get outside in the cool air.

A couple of weeks ago, we went on a trip to Ohio to a camper rally near Sugarcreek
where our trailer was made and got a tour of the factory, got to meet some of the
Amish workers who made our camper.

I managed to go 50 years without worrying about lightning, but it got me a couple
of years ago, I had just purchased a new pactor 4 modem, and the strike killed it
along with my hf rig, power supply and all that was attached to the radio. Blew the
tops of all the chips in the modem! So I have been slowly rebuilding and replacing
the shack. Once bit, twice shy, so unhook the antenna when ever I hear thunder now!
HI HI

K0WAV:

GE All and Thank you Bob for the venue!

Week was very chaotic. Did lots of that "life" stuff and not much radio.

However I did get some work done on the Repeater Battery Backup for the local club.
We how have 300+ Ah of backup power!

Had other things pop up but was able to complete the week at the Joplin Hamfest.

Good time and met lots of good people.

N3MEL:

It was a busy week last week with the Aug PKTNET

Had a good turn out and almost everyone sent the FLmsg ics213 forms.

Received a few private message and emails from folks that enjoyed doing the challenge
of sending it.

We are going to be heading in the camper for week in Sept to NY then for 2 weeks in
Oct to Myrtle Beach, sure looking forward to it.

Replies from N5VLZ (as best as I can recall them):

Rick, VA7RBP, is out celebrating his anniversary with his XYL, so he won't be here
this evening.

Bob, FB on the events at the track and the weather. Bummer on the HamWord glitch. It's
similar to the problems with the APRSPH server on APRS Thursday last week.

Carl, at least Bob wasn't the only one with issues on HamWord. GL on the medical issues
and the upcoming surgery. Bummer on the Melbourne Repeater taking the lightning hit. A
church down in Arkadelphia, Arkansas took a direct or close hit, and lost $30,000 of
electronic equipment!! FB on the Heathkit building, and hope you and Charley can get an
eyeball QSO.

Charley, I'm so much of a klutz that I'd probably scald myself with the hot water!! As
for the Mena Hamfest, I'll only be up there during the day on Saturday, as things look
now...we'll be under the tent at the QCWA table. Those dust storms are as bad as the
blizzards in winter. Folks are driving so fast, then visibility drops to nothing, and
you get a chain reaction wreck with fatalities. You certainly are the world traveler.

Jim, first, welcome to the net...we're usually here most Mondays, but as noted, we'll be
off next week for the holiday. Bummer on the foot injury, and losing the shack gear to a
lightning hit...but FB on touring the camper factory, and the e-scooter ride with the XYL.

Scott, at least we got your traffic...I know all about the "life" stuff. FB on the Backup
Power for the repeater, and on the Joplin Hamfest. The smaller ones are as good as the
big ones.

Glenn, FB on the PKTNET and folks sending in the ICS forms. And, FB on the travel plans to
New York, and to the Carolinas...hope that the tropics are cooperative.
