Islands On The Air - IOTA

Activation of VI60IOTA from VK7

https://www.iota-world.org/

The following is from Grant VK5GR who is coordinating the activation of a special event callsign celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Islands on the Air program this year in Australia. The callsign is VI60IOTA.

As part of the activation, Grant is looking to have the callsign be active from as many different VK IOTAs as we can manage. So far that includes OC-171, OC-001 and OC-261, with plans for OC-139, OC-136 and hopefully others in the works.

One of the biggest islands (second only to the mainland of course) is Tasmania. It would be great to also get some VK7 amateurs involved periodically over the next 9 months activating VI60IOTA from VK7.

Each activation window can be as long or short as the respective operators can offer. If they want to book the callsign for windows of 6 hours over a weekend or an afternoon that's fine. To book, they just need to email me at iotacheckpoint(at)gmail.com. They can then put the callsign on air - making sure to broadcast which IOTA they are located in (in VK7's case it will be one of OC-006, or potentially the Flinders Island group of OC-195 or the King/Bruny Island group of OC-233).

The only requirements are that all contacts are logged in an ADIF format, and the log is sent by email to iotacheckpoint(at)gmail.com within 24hrs of the conclusion of the activation.

Grant is hoping you can find some VK7 amateurs who would like to get involved with this project. Each planned activation is added to the VI60IOTA QRZ page (along with its IOTA designator) so that people know where the call is coming from at any given time. QSL cards are being handled through Charles M0OXO as the event QSL manager so nothing to do there for the operators either.

73 and regards,

Grant VK5GR, VK/Oceania IOTA Awards Checkpoint for the

Islands on the Air Awards Program

Thursday Night SSTV Nets

Another busy net night that saw the following participants, VK7s – TW, FGGT, EKA, ZAB, ZGK, HW, DMH and ZSB all sharing forty five photos.

The highlights were:

A Turnigy Accucell 6 intelligent battery charger

A current solar and radio propagation update from the BOM SWS website

A series of construction stages of a Tasmanian observatory, from ground works to completion

Not surprisingly the recent Aurora Australis or southern lights

From Wednesday night’s Auroral Propagation Extravaganza a Kaus Index graph and WSJT-X Q65 waterfall

The 150 year anniversary of the Waverley Woollen Mill in Launceston, the longest operating textile mill in Australia

The Harold Gatty Memorial at Campbell Town. Harold was born in Campbell Town and was navigator to Wiley Post when in 1931 they flew “Around the World in Eight Days”, shattering the previous record. They used new technologies like artificial horizon and directional gyros

A photo of Harold and Wiley with their aircraft

A series of artworks from M.C. Escher, famous for the so-called impossible constructions

A series of vintage mantel piece and portable broadcast radios

A reminder not to forget floppy disks, cassettes and VCR tapes

A leech the length of a finger

    Interesting porcelain sculptures in France

    Graffiti for bush rangers

A poster for the Royston Vasie band’s concert in Hobart for the 12th July

A wall of picture monitors from a TV studio control room

A Hi-Fi amplifier with an externally fitted motor drive for the volume control

Remember Ken VK7KRJ’s and Steve VK7OO’s fully automatic 24/7 monitoring sites that allow anyone who has sent an SSTV picture the ability to check them on their pages almost immediately, any time, both South and North Tasmania.

Also if you missed the net there are archives of all SSTV nights. These photos can be seen on Ken’s and Steve’s SSTV websites or on NTARC’s website under blogs and arranged as weekly nets.

A suggested theme for next week’s net is “islands and peaks”.

Last Friday’s morning tea saw some interesting technical items brought in;

Peter VK7KPC, his latest acquisition is a very nice version of an “SDR Transmit/Receive Switch”. It is placed in line between the transmitter and the antenna feed. If transmit RF is detected passing through the unit it will automatically protect and provide 38dB isolation to the receiver or SDR feed socket. It exhibits a RF sense switching threshold of less than 10mW from 1.8 MHz to 30MHz and also incorporates audio monitoring switching. This is a well manufactured unit, with both the black anodised diecast enclosure and the internal printed circuit board and wiring of a good standard. I believe his intention is to utilise his separate receiver or SDR to become the off air receiver for an HF transmitter only unit. I am sure there will be some on air testing soon.

Peter has also been making progress with his WS62 ex-military HF transceiver. This time making a successful contact using AM mode with Jordan VK3ACU in Victoria this week.

Stuart VK7ES brought in a couple bottles to add to the club’s collection, definitely non-alcoholic and of the vacuum tube type. They were left over spares from a couple of mainland AM broadcast transmitter sites.

The first valve was a 4-1000A, a conventional looking anode cap, glass envelope vacuum tube, even if substantially larger dimensions. After a bit of research as to the naming convention it appears the first number identifies the number of elements contained within the tube; in this case the "4" identifies the tube as a tetrode which contains filament, control grid, screen grid, and anode, with the second number indicating the maximum continuous power dissipation of the anode as 1000 Watts! Interestingly there is a specially designed base that integrates with the valve pin assembly to redirect air flow over the filament and grid connections for cooling. Needless to say this type of device would be mounted within a chimney allowing pressurised air to provide a continuous cooling stream.

Stuart’s second valve a 4CX3000A was made by Eimac in the USA. This one was a Tetrode and once again is air cooled. This little 2.5 KG baby has a 3500 W max plate dissipation with a typical power output of 5 KW! This one is not a conventional glass envelope vacuum tube but of the ceramic construction type. Apart from the usually magnificently constructed circular heatsink on the top there was one other feature that appeared quite strange. There were no pins on the base of the valve! The internal connections appeared on stacked circular disks with protruding fingers or pads on the valve base. The valve is inserted into the socket and then partially turned to engage the fingers with contacts. It was effectively a breechblock assembly to engage the valve contacts. As this valve was released in the 1970s I don’t think this base engagement method is a new invention, it's far more likely I have just been ignorant of this technology.

Thank you Stuart for the donation and the revelation of new technology that was actually old.

As always, pictures including the breechblock valve base will be available on the NTARC Web site under “Blogs” for this broadcast.

June Presentation
Glitching Pulsars - the sequel we have all been waiting for!

https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/upcoming-events/?event_id1=2163

Just after the discovery of pulsars by Jocelyn Bell in the late 60s, we have known about pulsars glitching. For 50 years astronomers have been trying to catch a glitch live with a large radio telescope. All failed.

Until in 2018 an unknown Tasmanian did what no one else in the world had. And it got him published in the world’s most prestigious journal.

What is a glitch? What is a pulsar? And what happened that made Nature publish his paper?

Dr Jim Palfreyman will present the sequel to his 2012 REAST talk. And like Godfather 2 and The Empire Strikes Back, it will be better than the original.

See you at the Queen's Domain Clubrooms on 5 June 2024 from 7:30pm. Presentation will be live and streamed via the REAST YouTube Channel.

To coincide with the International Lighthouse and LightShip Weekend (ILLW) - REAST's August Presentation night will be a wonderful wander through the life of Mike Jenner VK7FB and focus on his time with the Lighthouse Service.

Mike was lighthouse keeper on four of Tasmania's Lighthouses and Mike will take us through his experience in words, pictures and video.

A huge thank you to Mike and this should be a fascinating insight into life when lighthouses had people stationed at the actual lighthouses to looking after and maintaining the lights.

Wednesday Experimenter's Group

Last Wednesday night was an Auroral Propagation Spectacular with Rex VK7MO, Dr. Andrew Klekocuik and Richard VK7ZBX.

We started with Rex introducing the significant space weather event with some very nice photos then he went into the NOAA predictions of such events and a comparison with the 1859 Carrington Event which was of similar size!

Rex and Richard worked a number of 2 and 6m stations and Rex worked ZL stations on 6m with very little doppler indicating a propagation mode called Auroral-Es. This is where the ionised atmosphere creates patches of an “E” layer which scatters signal with very little doppler shift.

We then took a look at Dr. Andrew's All-Sky camera keograms and charts and the All-Sky Camera movie. We took a look at the Auroral Oval and the movies of the Auroral Oval moving closer to Tasmania.

There were audio recordings of the audio effects on the WSJT signals.
