AUSTRALIANA

South Australia Police rely on clear, consistent UHF radio communications to ensure officer safety, support rapid response, and maintain public safety. Their existing in-vehicle repeater systems had reached end-of-life, requiring modernisation to maintain performance and reliability, and so an upgrade was required.

In-vehicle repeaters are a critical technology that extends UHF radio coverage for police officers operating across South Australias diverse regional environments.

To give an example of the size of South Australia, VK5, it is just over four (4) times the size of the United Kingdom.

The new IVR system (In Vehicle Repeater) introduces meaningful enhancements that strengthen communication reliability across the fleet.

Critical comms in their reporting of this story went on to say The IVR allows the officer to use the portable radio when outside the vehicle to communicate through the vehicle's mobile radio.

INTERNATIONAL NEWS is with thanks to Amateur Radio Daily, ARRL,
DX-WORLD, eHam, Hackaday, IARU, IRTS, NEWSLINE, NZART, RAC,
Radioworld.com, RSGB, SARL and the World Wide sources of WIA.

World Amateur Radio Day, held on April 18 each year, is celebrated worldwide by radio amateurs and their national associations, which are organized as member-societies of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU). It was on this day in 1925 that the IARU was formed in Paris. American Radio Relay League (ARRL) Co-Founder Hiram Percy Maxim was its first president.

Honouring the Titanic

Amateur radio operators worldwide will have an opportunity to honour the passengers and radio crew of the RMS Titanic that sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

A Spanish special event station, EG1912T, will be on the air from 0000 UTC on April 10, the date on which the Titanic set sail from Southampton, England, until 2359 on April 15, the date on which it sank after hitting an iceberg.

Radio station managers and telegraph operators Jack Phillips, Harold Bride, and Harold Cottam, who played a leading role in the telegraphic communications during the rescue, will also be honoured, said Carlos Reboreda, EA1PJ, president of the Vigo-Val Mior Amateur Radio Union, which is sponsoring the 2026 special event operation.

In an age where Wi-Fi signals decide our moods and mobile phones rarely leave our palms, it sounds almost satirical to say that the most reliable companion in times of crisis is not a 5G tower but a humble radio set.

Yet every year on February 13, when the world observes World Radio Day, as
we did last week, we are reminded that the simplest technologies often outlast the loudest innovations. The date commemorates the establishment of United Nations Radio in 1946, but its relevance goes far beyond institutional history. It celebrates a medium that refuses to fade, because it is woven into the daily lives of millions. Closely linked to disaster response is ham radio-amateur radio operated by trained enthusiasts. When all conventional communication systems break down, ham operators step in.

Stepping in and up in the Middle East is Rami AlSharafi who is
re-building radio broadcasting in Gaza because nowhere is UpToDate news more urgent than in zones of conflict.

In Gaza, before October 7, 2023, a total of 23 local radio stations operated across the territory. Following the war triggered by Hamas attacks on Israel, every station was destroyed.

Yet Rami AlSharafi, director of Zaman FM, is working to piece broadcasting back together, a fragile but determined effort in the midst of profound damage.

United Nations News Journalist Rami Al-Sharfi, is also a director of
radio at Gaza's ZMN 90.60 FM radio station. He puts it plainly:

Zaman FM has resumed broadcasting, and we are currently the only radio station transmitting FM frequencies from inside the Gaza Strip after this massive destruction.

The need for reliable broadcasting is profound, particularly as Gaza faces the spread of diseases, the collapse of educational structures and disrupted public services.

People in or near central Texas who rely on GPS, received a warning from the US military base at Fort Hood that wide-ranging GPS tests there might cause interference with their own personal devices.

Farmers, pilots and smartphone-users and anyone else who relies on GPS to get from here to there have been paying close attention to an alert from the US military base at Fort Hood in Texas.

The announcement said that throughout February, the region that includes Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and even Oklahoma City could experience interference and disruptions.

The final testing period is February 23rd through to the 27th.

WEIRD AND WONDERFUL

As anyone who has ever worked a satellite - or does so regularly - working these birds, as they are known, has its rewards. A group of researchers in Australia has also been working the birds, a species known as a white-backed swallow, using temperature-sensing radio transmitters. Theyve received some great results, as we hear from John Williams VK4JJW.

"No matter which hemisphere you live in, no doubt this year has already shaped up to be a time of weather extremes. Wherever you are, you have a lot in common with the white-backed swallow, a prevalent species here in Australia with the very uncommon ability to survive despite freezing temperatures to blasting heat. Were talking about as much as 50 degrees Celsius - thats 122 degrees Fahrenheit - and we Australians especially can relate!

To learn how the birds survive, researchers in central Australias Sturt National Park outfitted some of them with tiny transmitters. This was not an avian Parks on the Air; this was a research project to monitor the birds physiological responses through biologging - a way to record and transmit their body temperatures changes as the birds slept in their burrows at night.

The result? A highly successful Worked All States of Bird Physiology. The collected data confirmed the scientists theory that a deep torpor - an essential near-shutdown of metabolism, heart rate and breathing - was essential for these birds, just as for some other bird species, such as the tiny hummingbirds in some regions of the world.

The results were recently published in the journal Current Biology. The scientists called the transmitters key to their findings because data could be gathered in the wild instead of an artificial setting, such as a laboratory. Hams, of course, would not be surprised at radios reliability. After all, the researchers HAD created a Reverse Beak Network.

This is John Williams VK4JJW."

AMSAT Switzerland has announced a special event and contest that will
encourages hams to make extreme long-distance contacts via amateur
 satellite.

The event recognizes Dr. Hans Rudolf Lauber (HB9RG) and his contribution
 to amateur radio.

HB9RG and Alfons Hring (DL6EZA) conducted the first amateur radio
contact via satellite on March 10th, 1965.

The event runs for 2 weeks, March 2-15.

The 10 furthest contacts will be evaluated.

The aim is to establish the widest possible radio connections during the
competition via satellites orbiting the Earth on a LEO, MEO or HEO orbit.

The use of a GEO satellite is currently deliberately avoided, as the
equal treatment of participants cannot be guaranteed either on the GEO
 satellite itself or worldwide.

RULES are on the link in this weeks WIA NATIOALNEWS SCRIPT.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - BALLOONS

At last received report from South Africa, ZS1ERZ-12 was currently in its fourteenth circumnavigation of the planet.

However, it has been encountering erratic altitude fluctuations.

After a gradual descent from its cruising altitude of 13,5 km, it dropped to 5 940 m, only to climb sharply back to 13 km within hours. It has since begun another descent. These swings likely correlate with an intense low-pressure system in the region (north of New Zealand); its survival remains uncertain until the next transmission is received.

FT8 enthusiasts:-

Starting February 13, the FCC have restricted U.S. amateur radio stations
from operating at 100 watts on 5.357 MHz, limiting power to just 9.5 watts
on that frequency.

To continue operating at 100 watts, many U.S. DXers have moved their FT8
activity to a new frequency: 5.371.5 MHz.

While many other countries will continue using the original frequency, it is important to notify anyone planning DXpeditions of the U.S. shift to 5.371.5 MHz.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS - INTERNET - THE HAMS DOMAIN.

New Zealands NZART have a new branch - and its something different.

Their newest branch is Digital Voice NZART Branch 404

 404 as in not found

 Their Mission Statement reads :-

To promote shared learning and technological advancement in the field of
 digital communications and electronics

Digital Voice NZART Branch 404 (not found) is to be a nationwide (and
international if there is an interest) virtual branch, a branch only
found on the internet. The branch will primarily serve as a membership
hub for digital voices and secondly serve as an engine to grow and
 diversify the DVNZ radio network.

404 will not serve to compete with other branches. The intention is not
to take members away, but rather to offer another gathering place where
digitally focused hams might find better support for their journey.

Meet Megan EI5LA - Deputy Youth Officer Ireland.

Megan Lorenz EI5LA is both a relatively new IRTS committee member and is
Deputy Youth Officer within the newly formed youth subcommittee.

As their newest and youngest committee member, Megan brings a unique
perspective alongside a contesting record that would put many of us to shame - and shes only getting started!

Licensed at 14, Megan began contesting at 15 and has since competed in close to 100 contests across CW, SSB and digital modes. She is recognised as one of the leading youth contesters worldwide, having already competed in one WRTC event, and has qualified to compete at WRTC 2026 as part of the Youth Team in the United Kingdom in July 2026.

She has also proudly represented Ireland at YOTA Camp on four occasions.

Megans appointment reflects the Irish societys commitment to long-term modernisation, stainability, and talent retention. In her deputy youth officer role, she is already making a strong contribution to promoting amateur radio among young operators.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- RESCUE RADIO

An annual occasion that celebrates strength, courage and pride in a free homeland ended in tragedy in the Andes Mountains even as amateur radio operators mobilized to help with their best efforts. Graham Kemp VK4BB brings us that story.

GRAHAM: Riding horseback across the mountains each year recalls a defining moment of independence for South American nations. This year's 209th anniversary ride of the Crossing of the Andes under Jose de San Martin and the Army of the Andes, led to an emergency evacuation of one rider in early February. As the mounted expedition began its return trip home through Chile in early evening, the woman suffered a serious fall from her horse.

Writing in the Forums section of QRZ.com, Carlos Almirn, LU7DSY, said that the San Felipe Provincial Radio Club, CE2REU, sent out a call for emergency assistance through the Chilean ham radio network. The Los Molinos Radio Club of Villa Alemana, CE2CQ, provided GPS coordinates for the mountains' La Vega section. As ground resources and a helicopter were dispatched, the Los Molinos hams continued their coordination with the expeditioners through a link with the San Felipe Provincial Radio Club. The rescue teams arrived, performed CPR followed by an evacuation. It was later reported that the rider had died from her injuries while being treated at the hospital.

This is Graham Kemp VK4BB.

Irvine Disaster Emergency Communications (IDEC) in Irvine, California, is offering a Technician-level amateur radio licensing course and more than 100 residents including many from the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) registered for the programs introductory session.

Over 80 participants attended the initial in-person orientation, and 65 have formally enrolled in the guided online training course as they continue toward earning their FCC Technician Class license.

IDEC is a volunteer organization of licensed amateur radio operators that supports the City of Irvines emergency preparedness plan and assists the Irvine Police Department by providing emergency communications during disasters and other incidents when conventional systems may fail.

The eight-week course is designed for individuals with little or no prior technical background. Instruction covers amateur radio rules and regulations, operating practices, basic electronics, radio theory, and safety. The program combines weekly instructor- led Zoom review sessions, in-person classroom meetings featuring equipment demonstrations, and a final in-person examination session. IDEC members serve as instructors and mentors throughout the course, providing guidance, answering questions, and introducing participants to the role amateur radio plays in local emergency response and public service.
