There are several methods to track activations, though the approach can vary depending on the operator. One method is to monitor the most commonly used frequencies. In VK, SSB activations usually happen on 3.644, 7.090, 7.144, 14.244, 14.310, 21.244, and 28.444. However, it's important to keep in mind that activations can occur on any permitted frequency. Matt, VK7MAT, also suggests checking the website for each program to find details on CW and Digital calling frequencies. Another option is to use a spotting app or website, which will show either spot or alert information. A spot is posted during an activation and includes details like the operator's callsign, frequency, mode, and location. Spots can be submitted by either the activator or a hunter. An alert, however, is usually posted by the activator in advance of the activation, sometimes even weeks before, and contains similar information to a spot. Popular spotting apps and websites include ParksnPeaks, SOTAwatch3, SOTAGoat, Ham Alert, POTA.app, DX Cluster, and Heimdall. During the week, activations took place at Skemps Myrtle Bank Forest Reserve (VK7HAM & VK7AN), and Jim (VK7JZ) activated a SOTA summit on Florentine Peak, located within Mount Field National Park. Both activations occurred in multi reference sites. A few VK7 operators were lucky enough to confirm a QSO with VK0/FT4YM/P, who was activating an Antarctica POTA reference, Casey Station (ANARE) Antarctic Station. This is a highly sought after reference given its location. WWFF Hunter awards were awarded to VK7PJM for hunting 475 different VKFF references and VK7MAT for hunting 325 different VKFF references. Take advantage of the free spotting apps and websites. Activators, be sure to post a spot when you're activating, and hunters, if you hear an activation, make sure to post a spot to let others know. 73, Matt, VK7MAT -------------------------------- Sewing Circle Net MEET THE VOICE 2025. The event was the Nipples on Ripples Regatta for 2025. The event is centred around Men and women who are survivors of breast cancer, and to bring awareness of the disease to the general public, through the survivor’s racing Dragon boats. Tassie put on awesome weather, and the location is beautiful and world renown. We provided radio comms at control, the marshalling area, finish, and to the start and rescue boats. The event is totally run by volunteers who did an awesome job, and we all got on like a house on fire. The participants were from all the eastern states, and Tasmania. Half way through the event, they held the flowers on the water ceremony, where flowers were scattered on the lake in memory of those that had passed away from cancer, and 3 Dragon Boats encircled the flowers, it was an emotional reminder of this disease. We were impressed with the committee that ran the event and provided us lunch. An awesome day, for a great cause and being able to show our support. We met some lovely survivors who are upbeat and moving on, it certainly gave us a reality check on how minor some of our worries are. Andrew VK7XR, has for many years donated his professional PA system and music for the event. NWTARC members VK7MAR Mark, VK7EV Eric, VK7XR Andrew were joined by NTARCs VK7ZAB Andre and VK7ZSB Stefan on the day. Pictures and video of the event can be viewed on the VK7 Amateur Radio FaceBook page. --------------- Golden Oldie Antenna Upgrade One of the NWTARC members had purchased a new Triband antenna but, no longer being a spring chicken, needed assistance to get it onto a mast. So this week Mark VK7MAR and Andrew VK7XR, a couple of our able bodied club members installed the antenna, while Eric supervised from the walker Hi Hi. They also interfaced his amateur radio to his computer, as his vision is no longer 20/20. In the NW we have an ever aging and less agile amateur community, so if you would like to assist randomly some of our older amateurs, please let the club know, so we can assist these club members and other amateurs, who can no longer attend to these matters. 73, Eric, VK7EV, News Officer, NWTARC -------------------------------- NEWS FROM THE NORTH SOTA/WWFF PARKS GROUP The Summits On The Air/World Wide Flora and Fauna parks group meets twice weekly – Mondays and Fridays 10.30AM till 12.00 at the Glebe Gardens Cafe, Henry Street, Launceston. For more information contact Al on 0417 354 410. 73, Al, VK7AN -------------------------------- Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club Incorporated www.ntarc.net The only other notable happening this week was the NTARC Annual General Meeting held last Wednesday night the 12th of February. The AGM saw a good attendance of voting members. Extensive reports were presented by the President and Treasurer, followed by each of the club activity leaders and the all-important Auditor’s statement. All were tabled and each was well received by the membership. The elections saw the return of Idris VK7ZIR as President, André VK7ZAB as Treasurer, Stefan VK7ZSB as Secretary and Roslyn as committee member. The only change was for the position of Vice President, which was filled by Ian VK7IH. Roger VK7ARN our Internal Auditor and Stefan our Public Officer were both incumbent and are continuing in their respective positions. All the club activity co-ordinators were again appointed, pending a couple of acceptances, to their respective positions; Tony VK7YBG as Northern Repeater Officer, David VK7JD continuing his role as Project Manager for Mt Arthur, with both being assisted by Paul VK7KPA and Andrew VK7DW as Assistant Repeater Officers. Other club activity coordinators agreeing to continue in their roles for 2025 were Peter VK7PD as the Education Officer, Ian VK7IH as our new JOTA/JOTI Coordinator, Andrew VK7DW QSL manager and Roger VK7ARN as our Safety Communications Coordinator. So there you are folks, you now have the NTARC Committee and Coordinators for 2025. The AGM was immediately followed by the bi-monthly General Meeting, then what else but supper, courtesy of members bringing a plate. Thanks go to our stalwart Ros for bringing all the offerings together into a laden supper table that was enjoyed by all in the gathering well into the night. From the new committee composition you may have noticed that Peter VK7KPC has passed on the baton of Vice President and JOTA co-ordinator to Ian VK7IH. This is because the family is moving to South Australia shortly. Peter has been an NTARC member since moving to Tasmania from the mainland back in 2007 for a two year temporary posting. Yes I did say a “two year posting”, HiHi. In that time he has held the position of Vice President for 10 years and probably even more importantly, Peter has championed JOTA activities in Scouting Tasmania and its involvement with amateur radio clubs for the last 17 years! Club members are sorry to see you moving to South Australia but wish you and Kay the very best. No doubt we will still stay in contact with you on Discord or even on air. Now back to the house keeping. UPCOMING EVENTS TestNet and TechNet session - Every Wednesday, TestNet/CW course on 3.580MHz from 7 pm, then a TechNet on 3.567MHz from 7.30 pm till 8.30 pm. There were many serious, funny, sad and uplifting stories and I include some extracts from one that came in from some of our REAST members in New Zealand - Ken ZL4KD and Margaret ZL3YF. Ken related that he would participate in the annual NZART award in January for contacts from locations determined by the theme for that year. Ken’s wife Margaret was navigator and scribe for logging during these events. Eventually Margaret got the bug and the local club was running a class and Margaret was keen to attend and got her licence and call ZL3YF (YF=wife). Margaret has different amateur radio interests to Ken mainly chases parks and the various “ota” and she enjoys going to NZART, ALARA and Tassie ham events. She sometimes attends branch meetings and refuses to accept the misogyny that a few OM persist in dishing out! Margaret has successfully nagged our branch into getting back out and participating in our Jock White national field event. If you hear her, please work her! On the flip-side there were also amateurs represented that believed that you only took up the hobby for enjoyment and there was little need to get others involved. Thanks to all who came along and shared their strategies and ideas about getting family and friends involved (or not) in the hobby of amateur radio. The video of the night can be found on the REAST YouTube Streaming Channel. https://www.youtube.com/live/xs7nxA6NMvY?si=MD5hmbWjSkf9GYjK 73 REAST Committee -------------------------------- Annual General Meeting 2025 https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/upcoming-events/?event_id1=2670 REAST will be holding its AGM today the 16th February 2025 at 11am in the Queens Domain Clubrooms. On a Wednesday night people start arriving at the night around 6pm and many bring their dinner to enjoy. There is always much discussion, experimenting, playing, talking, drinking coffee and tea, serious cunning plan development and general amateur radio shenanigans and world problem solving in the clubrooms as well!! https://www.reast.asn.au/news-events/live-stream/ https://www.reast.asn.au/special-interest-groups/amateur-tv/ https://www.youtube.com/c/ReastHobart/ We stream the nights on the REAST YouTube streaming channel and we also go out on RF - DVB-T 7MHz Standard Definition on 445.5MHz.
