AR Mag, Issue 1, 2025 is out now !!

Date : 10 / 02 / 2025
Author : Roger Harrison - VK2ZRH

The theme, or the focus, this issue is about portable pursuits. Getting out and operating in the great outdoors.
Some wag said once that going portable was the best fun you could have outdoors fully clothed. Having done it
myself, I totally agree.

These days, operators are also doing it to escape the urban RF interference – that RF fog generated by so much
electronic equipment, ranging from cellphone chargers to TV sets, to household solar panel regulators.

This issue, articles on portable operation fill 16 pages, including a blow-by-blow recount of the
Flinders Island radio expedition – VK5FIL – that ran for a week in April last year, through to everything
you always wanted to know about Parks on the Air but were afraid to ask,
brought to you by Marty Nelson VK4KC who happens to be the POTA admin for Australia.

On the technical side, the untiring Jim Tregellas VK5JST presents a remarkably versatile valve tester.
Just the thing for boat anchor restorers and up-to-date tube tinkerers. Vacuum tubes aren’t on the way
out anytime soon!

In addition, we have an article looking at dish antennas from a new angle.
Issue 1 last year featured an article titled “Of Lobes and Dishes,” by George Galanis VK3EIP.
This new article from George takes a step to the side and includes info about a cool online
application you can play with.

The saga of the development of the Oscar satellites up to AMSAT Oscar 7 continues,
revealing much detail not revealed to-date.
We have a wrap-up of the Ham-E-Con event in Hobart last November, with a surprise at the end.

In the Below 25 column, for young people on the air, Alec Cherry VK2MV reveals planning for
a remote amateur station to enable young licensees to get on the air, beyond the interference
present in the cities – and – we get to see a recent photo of the four YOTA broadcast news crew.
Put faces to the voices.

This issue, our regular column on “Your WIA working for you” lays out the behind-the-scenes work
necessary to coordinate amateur satellites, launch new ones and to keep them supported.

W-I-A News includes coverage of amateurs supporting the recent California wild fires,
the International Amateur Radio Union’s centenary, and a quick biography of our new Returning Officer,
Pete Cherry VK2LP, who is busy now conducting the election of directors.

As ever, there is always more to read in Amateur Radio magazine, Issue 1 for 2025.
More guts. Less gab. Proudly produced and printed in Australia.
