The LoRa APRS network in Central America processed estimated 2,500 to 4,000 RF data packets to the global APRS-IS system over the past 7 days (August 16-23, 2026). This digital mode operates primarily in the UHF band (regional standard frequency of 433.775 MHz Programming Guide APRS Network Panama v1), serving as an alternative of low consumption and high resilience to traditional APRS in VHF.
Package activity is strongly polarized, concentrating almost entirely in the countries of the far south of the isthmus due to the presence of amateur radio communities focused on the deployment of fixed infrastructure (iGates and Digipeaters).
Distribution of LoRa APRS Packages by Country (Last 7 Days)
The density and volume of frames captured and injected into international servers such as aprs.fi and LoRa APRS iGate Live show the following behavior in the region:
Panama (HP) — ~1,500 to 2,200 packages: It is the most active core in the region for this technology. It maintains interconnected critical nodes that collect weather and positioning frames. Highlights of the week include HP2NIC-10 (Panama City) Station info for HP2NIC-10 – aprs.fi – live APRS map, HP2NG-10 (Colon) Station info for HP2NG-10 – aprs.fi – live APRS map and HP2DFA-15 (Pylon) EA2RCF LoRa APRS MAP Backup.
Costa Rica (TI) — ~800 to 1,200 packages: It has a sustained growth of portable and experimental gateways in the Central Valley and mountainous areas of Alajuela, serving as a bridge for compact 1 Watt trackers.
Guatemala (TG) and El Salvador (YS) — ~200 to 400 packages: mainly intermittent or experimental traffic. Telemetry beacons from fixed domestic stations are recorded in compact urban environments.
Honduras (HR) and Nicaragua (YN) — Marginal activity (<50 packages): No reports of commercially or community iGates LoRa permanently lit during the last 7 days; the activity recorded is limited to very specific field tests.
Technical classification of processed plots
Packages injected using spread spectrum modulation (Chirp Spread Spectrum - CSS) were broken down as follows:
82f Position Packages (Beacons): Compact geographic coordinates sent by LoRa trackers (such as LilyGO T-Beam-based devices).
12f State Telemetry (Status): Automatic reports of the state of charge of lithium batteries (18650) and solar panel voltages integrated into the portable mountain nodes.
6f Short Messages and ACK: Direct link confirmations and minimal text interactions due to network bandwidth limitations.
🚦 Radiofrequency (RF) Performance Metrics
Reports from the servers show that the Central American LoRa APRS network stands out for its high efficiency in the face of noise:
SNR (Signal/Noise Ratio): Ranked between 3 dB and 12 dB on average LoRa APRS iGate Logs & Analysis, allowing to decode packets even below the threshold of thermal noise.
RSSI (Signal Strength): Stable records between -102 dBm and -118 dBm on metropolitan links to the LoRa APRS iGate Logs & Analysis elevated receiving stations.
Route Used (Path): Practically 95f traffic strictly applied the null route or WIDE1-1, which is the recommended standard for LoRa in order not to saturate the common UHF frequency configuration guide Network APRS Panama v1.
