The RD Contest honours amateur radio operators who lost their lives during World War II. It is designed to encourage friendly participation and to help improve the operating skills of all entrants. The event is held on the weekend closest to 15th August, the date marking the end of hostilities in the Southwest Pacific. The contest begins with a short opening address from a Guest Speaker, transmitted on various WIA frequencies in the minutes leading up to the start. During this commemorative ceremony, a roll call is read of amateurs who made the ultimate sacrifice during WWII. The perpetual trophy, held at the WIA National Office, is inscribed annually with the name of the winning State or Territory.
